DENR: Marinduque Rich in Potential to Become Tourist Haven

BOAC, Marinduque, April 23 (PIA) -  Marinduque, considered to be the "Heart of the Philippines" has a big potential for further tourism development, Mimaropa's regional environment chief  declared during the recent 14th Philippine Speleological Society National Caving Congress.

Environment and Natural Resources Regional Executive Director Oscar Dominguez said Marinduque should be credited for its efforts to maintain peace and order, a critical requirement for tourist destinations.

Apart from its natural wonders - caves, beaches and waters - Marinduque is known for the annual Moriones Festival which was observed last week and for being the country’s geodetic reference.

More than 500 cavers from various clubs from all over the country came to the caving congress to learn the latest spelunking techniques, raise and resolve issues and of course, join cave explorations.

Part of the congress, held at the Marinduque National High School, were crash courses on Philippine tourism, cave geology and other outdoor topics.

Aside from the DENR and the PSS, the Caving Congress is supported by the Provincial Government of Marinduque, The Department of Tourism, the Philippine Cave Guide Associations.

For her part, Marinduque Governor Carmencita Reyes urged DENR and other agencies to support the efforts of the province to promote its natural assets. Courtesy from Myda N. Lagran and Lydon Plantilla, (LBR/LP/MNL/PIA-4B/Marinduque), Philippine Information Agency.
