The deaths of two middle-aged men due to heart attack triggered by the typhoon were reported Thursday night by the Office of Civil Defense in Mimaropa (Region 4-B), bringing to seven the number of casualties from the region.
The latest report brought to 100 the total casualties, adding two to the 98 named in the official list of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) as of Thursday morning.
Most of the victims were hit or pinned down by uprooted trees, electric posts and wind-blown roofs, walls and other debris.
Some died from drowning or from heart attack or stroke.
Majority of the reported casualties were from Calabarzon (Region 4-A), where at least 70 people died in the wake of Glenda.
Of the reported casualties from the region, 26 were from Quezon province, 20 from Laguna, 13 from Batangas, eight from Cavite and three from Rizal.
The rest of the casualties were from Central Luzon with eight; Mimaropa, seven; Bicol, six; Eastern Visayas, five; Metro Manila, two, and Western Visayas, one.
Five other persons remain missing more than a week since Glenda’s
exit last July 17 while battering Luzon, including Metro Manila.
At least 630 persons were reported injured during the typhoon,
mostly from Bicol (177), Calabarzon (159), Eastern Visayas (151) and
Central Luzon (115).
About half a million houses, mostly in Calabarzon, were destroyed
during the typhoon, according to latest reports reaching the NDRRMC.
At least 302,000 houses were destroyed in Calabarzon, about
132,000 in Bicol and about 55,000 in Eastern Visayas, which was
devastated by Supertyphoon “Yolanda” last November.
Estimated damage to property in seven affected regions rose to P10.7 billion.
