Marinduque Rep. Velasco pushes for the passage of local bills

Lord Allan Jay Q. Velasco, representative for the Lone District of Marinduque, authored House Bill No. 6071, entitled “An Act Providing for the Establishment of TESDA Provincial Training Center, Marinduque and Appropriating Funds Therefore” and House Bill No. 6038, entitled “An Act Declaring May 3 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Municipality of Sta. Cruz, Province of Marinduque, in Commemoration of its Founding Anniversary, to be known as Sta. Cruz Day.”

Velasco recognizes the important contribution of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in preparing Marinduqueños for employment opportunities, locally and abroad. Popular TESDA courses offered in Marinduque are: a) household service; b) massage tutorials; c) electrical installation and maintenance training; and d) baking tutorials. With the support of MATA Partylist Rep. Tricia Nicole Velasco-Catera, H.B. No. 6071 was passed by the Committee on Higher and Technical Education last December 11, 2017.

On the other hand, House Bill No. 6038, which sought to institutionalize the celebration of the people of Sta. Cruz of their beloved municipality’s Foundation Day every 3rd of May, was approved on 3rd reading last December 4, 2017.

With its successful passage in the House of Representatives, Hon. Velasco is hopeful that the “Sta. Cruz Day” bill will also find support in the Senate and be signed into law by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte by 2018. Marinduquenews.com

DOT pushes 'Bring Home A Friend' campaign

Aside from focusing on prominent tourist destinations, the Department of Tourism (DOT) on Tuesday pushed for personalized "Bring Home a Friend" program per province.

In a statement, DOT Secretary Wanda Teo urged locals in every region to take part in the initiative and endorse what is unique in their respective provinces to attract foreign friends to the Philippines.

From the rustic feel of one's ancestral house down to the heirloom recipe of their grandparents, Teo said Filipinos should put forward the staples one looks forward to when going home to the province.

"We invite you to welcome your foreign friends to the doorsteps of your hometown," she said. "Our different provinces and regions offer a much more different experience of the Philippines only we Filipinos know."

Teo's call to "Bring Home A Friend" to the provinces coincides with the roll out of the campaign's regional roadshow, following its grand launch at Resorts World Manila and multiple international launches and overseas activations.

DOT Mimaropa capped the 15-region launching with its own version in Palawan.

Meanwhile, DOT Eastern Visayas kicked off the regional reintroduction of the referral incentive program last October in Tacloban.

Among the notable regional launches were in the DOT Northern Mindanao, CALABARZON and CARAGA.

“The regional launching of the Bring Home A Friend campaign gave our Regional Offices a sense of ownership and a chance to localize the program," Teo said.

"Their launches have call to actions inviting everyone in the region to invite their friends to visit their provinces,” she added.

Per the department, different regional offices will have follow up promotion, advertising, and activations during local festivals or other tourism related events to sustain the momentum of the campaign.

The BHAF basically encourages all Filipinos and expatriates to invite foreigners to the country, this time with a chance to win raffle prizes such as Megaworld Eastwood Le Grand condominium unit, a brand new Toyota Vios and PHP200,000 worth of Duty Free gift certificate.

The promo campaign, revived by Teo in October 2017, would end on April 15, 2018. — Written by Joyce Ann L. Rocamora, PNA | Photo by Ryan Roldan | Marinduquenews.com

DOH-Mimaropa expands Telemedicine Services in Marinduque

The Department of Health (DOH) – MIMAROPA (Oriental/Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) together with the local government of the Province of Marinduque recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement with two government medical centers namely Batangas Medical Center and East Avenue Medical Center to provide expanded health care delivery system through telemedicine and establishing a Toxico Disease Surveillance System for the province.

“With this collaboration, we can now properly address the medical needs of the affected individuals in communities that are exposed to the dangers of marcopper mining site in the municipalities of Mogpog, Boac and Sta. Cruz,” Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo stated during the launching and MOA signing held at the Dr. Damian J. Reyes Memorial Hospital in Boac, Marinduque on May 30, 2017.

“The two medical centers are known for their specialization on poison and toxicology, as well as quality medication, treatment, diagnosis and management of patients. They will serve as referral hospitals for patients from Marinduque,” he added.

Research and assessment conducted by the health department during 1980s and 1990s discovered that high level of heavy metal poisoning coming from the mining site is still prevalent from the abandoned mining sites.

“We have responded to the needs of these exposed communities by conducting physical examination on the residents through the use of Telemedicine which virtually evaluate them through video conference,” Janairo emphasized.

Medical expenses of patients referred to the two hospitals, such as hospitalization, treatment and laboratory examinations will be charged to the Medical Assistance Program (MAP) of the regional office, including expenses incurred in transporting specimen for laboratory examination.

The telemedicine system is the first health interactive system was established at the Dr. Damian Reyes Memorial Hospital in Boac, Marinduque on November 26 and have been used for remotely diagnosing and treating patients requiring immediate treatment and care from the province.

Marinduque is one of the five island provinces of MIMAROPA with six municipalities accessible through Lucena City, Quezon via a 3-hour RoRo boat ride or through a commercial plane with twice scheduled flights from Manila. It costs a patient about Php6,000 - 8,000 thousand pesos to travel to a hospital of choice or a tertiary hospital for referral.

5 beautiful shots of the majestic Mt. Malindig

Mt. Malindig taken in Payanas, Torrijos | Photo by Kevin Marasigan
Mount Malindig is a large potentially active stratovolcano and highest mountain in the island of Marinduque lies in the towns of Buenavista and Torrijos.

Malindig is considered a potentially active volcano, in part because of the sulfuric springs of Malbog. Its unique location, at the heart of Southern Tagalog, creates a panorama that encompasses Mindoro, Verde Island and Southern Luzon all the way to Bicol and Burias Island. There is a military radio outpost at 900MASL.

The mountain is the largest on the island of Marinduque and the most popular climb and hike for mountaineers and alike, known for its unique environmental biodiversity. It is the home of different species of wild orchids and other endemic wildlife. Due to its height above 1,000 meters (3,300 ft.) above sea level, by law it has been identified as a protected area. The dormant volcano has three peaks, the Trek and climb to the peak is rated as easy to moderate. After passing the Radio Station base on the mountain, it has been known to be a mossy and closed canopy forest trek with regular foggy surroundings. It is also used by the Buenavista townfolks as a cattle grazing area.

Here are the other beautiful shots of the majestic Mt. Malindig.
