Governor Reyes Faces Graft Raps

Governor Carmencita Reyes
Marinduque Governor Carmencita O. Reyes is facing graft and corruption charges before the Office of the Ombudsman (OMB) for allegedly delaying the construction of the airport runway in Gasan town. In filing a joint criminal complaint, the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption and ex-Marinduque Board Member Melecio Go also asked the OMB to suspend Reyes so that the cementing of the runway can be completed. It states the Department of Transportation and Communications awarded in 2013 the cementing of the runway to three contractors, including Sargasso Construction owned by Go. The two contractors had already finished their jobs, but Sargasso could not complete the cementing of its 147-meter part of the runway because Reyes refused to grant permit to extract and process gravel and sand aggregates.

Chasing Fire: The Ups and Downs of Beverly May Grimaldo of Torrijos, Marinduque

Inspector Beverly May P. Grimaldo
While most people are told to run away from fire, there are those who are meant to chase it.

Firefighters spend everyday of their lives waiting to be called to respond to hazardous fires, teaching communities about fire prevention, and inspecting buildings to make sure they adhere to the Fire Code. It’s a job dominated by men, but this did not stop Inspector Beverly May Grimaldo from chasing fire.

Nevada Court Hears Barrick Gold - Philippines Province Appeal

The protest in Nevada on the Marinduque, Philippines case
against Barrick Gold has generated a lot of press
LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Philippine island province that experienced mining waste disasters in the 1990s but has been unable to find a court to hear its claim for damages is asking Nevada’s highest court to rekindle a nearly 10-year-old state lawsuit against Barrick Gold Corp.

Attorney James McCarthy pleaded with six Nevada Supreme Court justices Tuesday to let the Province of Marinduque sue in Nevada because the Toronto-based mining company has substantial operations in the state.
